American Mediates Ukrainian Talks in the UAE as Trump Administration Seeks for Settlement
High-level negotiations involving US, Moscow, and Ukrainian delegates began in the United Arab Emirates this Tuesday, marking the latest phase in initiatives to broker a resolution to resolve the ongoing war in the region.
High-Level Delegates and Opening Talks
US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll reportedly met with a Moscow group on Monday night, with dialog proceeding into the following day.
âThe talks are going well and we remain optimistic. He is working in tight alignment with Washington as discussions unfold,â an official representative stated.
The Ukrainian top intelligence official, the head of military intelligence, was also expected to take part in the discussions, though it remained unclear whether face-to-face engagement with Russian representatives would happen or if distinct one-on-one meetings would be conducted.
Membership of the Russian team was not immediately clear. âWe cannot provide details. Our position is to monitor press coverage,â a Russian spokesperson told state media.
Background and Updated Peace Plan
The current talks follow recent negotiations in Switzerland where American and Kyiv representatives revised a draft US proposal for ending the conflict.
Russia has not yet approved the most recent draft of the proposal and is unlikely to agree to many of the Kyiv changes.
Moscowâs foreign minister, the Russian diplomat, emphasized that any amended peace plan must adhere to the âessence and wordingâ of what was covered during earlier summit talks between both countries.
Global Reactions and Apprehensions
European officials are reportedly finding it difficult to remain involved in the process as American officials drive the efforts.
The Finnish leader, a European figure, who has stepped forward as a key contact between the US and European officials, stated that the coming days would be critical in efforts to reach a peace settlement.
He reportedly held discussions with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the alliance representatives, emphasizing that âThe future of Ukraine is for Ukraine to decide, and European security is for Europe to decide.â
Meanwhile, the French president, the French official, warned against a peace deal that would amount to a âsurrenderâ for the nation.
âTerms presented suggest what Russia could agree to. Does that mean that it is what must be accepted by the Ukrainians and the Europeans? Absolutely not,â he stated.
Specifics of the Initial US Plan
American plan was originally made up of multiple articles and was drawn from dialog between US and Russian representatives, with contributions from Ukrainian security authorities.
Major elements of the plan allegedly included:
- The nation relinquishing areas presently occupied by Moscow
- Additional regions that might be required to be willingly given up
- Limits on the size of the military forces
- Immunity for all sides in the war regarding violations
Latest Events and Ongoing Difficulties
The US official reportedly went to the Ukrainian capital to brief Zelenskyy on the proposal and press rapid acceptance.
This pressure, combined with the leaking of the plan, reportedly took by surprise Kyiv and EU authorities.
The Ukrainian president reportedly that the nation was facing one of the toughest periods in its existence and was being compelled to choose between âsurrendering honor or sacrificing a vital partner.â
Subsequently, Driscoll briefed alliance representatives on the plan in the capital, with one participant labeling it as âan extremely difficult sessionâ and noting that EU ambassadors were shocked by both the substance and manner of the presentation.
The US administration later moderated its stance, stating that the comprehensive proposal was an âinitial basis for negotiationâ rather than a final demand.
Military Situation During Talks
As diplomatic talks continue, Moscow has continued its nightly assaults on Ukrainian urban centers.
Russian forces reportedly fired numerous of projectiles and hundreds of drones at targets in and around Kyiv, according to Kyiv sources.
Zelenskyy stressed that Moscow must not believe it could prevail in the conflict while negotiations were underway.
âWhat matters most now is that all partners move toward diplomacy together, through joint efforts. Sanctions and pressure on Moscow must yield outcomes,â he stated.
The capitalâs mayor reported that multiple people had been fatally injured in the recent assault on the capital.
