Coach Emma Coates Departs the Young Lionesses Post to Become Head Coach at NWSL's Bay FC
In a significant career move, the former England youth boss has stepped down from the England Womenâs Under-23 national team to take over as head coach for NWSL expansion side Bay FC.
Transition Stateside
She takes over from Albertin Montoya, who guided the San Jose-based club during its debut two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya stated in September his intention to resign at the end of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC end up 13th in the 14-team standings.
âMy time with the FA has been incredible my time with the FA,â commented Coates. âThe experience has been formative both professionally and personally. Now, I feel ready and excited to test my abilities in a new environment.â
Coaching Pedigree
Since taking charge in 2023, Coates oversaw the England U23s through fixtures including a narrow win over Norway in the European U23 League and a high-scoring loss to the United States. Making the move alongside her to America is her England assistant, Gemma Davies, a ex- Aston Villa manager in the WSL.
Bay FC's CEO, a one-time Football Association technical lead, highlighted Coates's abilities: âCoates is an excellent coach, but she also has a proven track record of developing players to succeed on the biggest stages.â
âCoates excels at leading of squads and building ethos and has the strategic outlook we were seeking,â added Cossington.
Club Context
Bay FC experienced a mixed start to its NWSL existence, finishing in seventh place and suffering a postseason defeat in its debut season before slipping to a near-bottom placement in 2025.
The new FA womenâs technical director, Gavin Step, bid farewell to the outgoing coaches: âWe thank Emma and Gemma for their service and wish them all the best with their venture abroad. They have played a crucial part in fortifying the pipeline between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTheir work has directly impacted the development of many young players who have progressed into senior Lionesses,â he added.
Player Progression
After succeeding Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has been integral to the rise of multiple players to the England senior side, including midfielder Lucia Kendallâwho netted her first Lionesses goalâand forwards Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
Discussions for new U23 coaching staff has begun, to continue the progress of the Womenâs Under-23s setup in the coming years.
