The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
