Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Favorites
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a long-held wish, even if he is terrified about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he explains. "A part that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way still living in a bizarre shared scenario. The chance of a self-referential narrative, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.
Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
