Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
The former official stated he would withdraw from public positions after legislative body made public his repeated correspondence with the financier

Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.

The economist remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over Harvard University, stated on recently that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed messages revealed that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's determination to step down.

"We value his numerous inputs and the insight he offered to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Congressional Action

This news arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on this week to pass a bill that would require the US justice department to disclose its documents on Epstein.

The legislation will subsequently head to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has said he expects to sign the legislation, after reversing his view on the matter following pushback from his base.

Message Details

A group of Epstein-related emails released by the House Oversight Committee days ago included several prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The emails revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to link Summers to notable world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were released with the general audience, the former official stated he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to persist in corresponding with the financier".

He continued that he hoped "to restore faith and repair relationships with the people nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied senior posts under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He presided over the institution from five years and remains a academic there. When stating his step-down from public roles previously on this week, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in DC where the professor was a prominent member, announced that the economist was ceased to be connected with the institution.

Summers became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which makes the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO the company leader.
