The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
