Miami Heat and Trail Blazers Secure First Victories Following Player Arrests
Miami recorded 86 first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their first NBA game after player Terry Rozier was detained over suspected illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was additionally detained as part of a sweeping federal probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the allegations.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up 86 opening half points to be ahead of Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and later said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also won their first game after the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver also said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"So, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
