In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
