A significant manufacturing zone situated in the suburbs of the capital is addressing nuclear contamination after an official taskforce detected presence of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants within the area, which encompasses businesses that export chilled marine products.

Urgent Measures and Product Withdrawal

The finding has triggered immediate cleanup operations and the moving of local inhabitants, coming after a comparable contamination scare in the US that was traced back to the Jakarta facilities.

A major multinational store chain is one of the companies that have recalled items from their shelves following the finding.

Investigation and Discovery of Contamination

The country's authorities launched an inquiry after the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of chilled breaded shrimp exported by an Indonesian firm.

Officials issued an advisory advising distributors and retailers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, even though the detected level was well under the agency's intervention threshold. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not present an acute risk to the public.

The FDA stated: “The primary health effect of concern after longer term, ongoing low dose contact (for example through eating of contaminated products or liquid over a period) is an increased risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Health Examinations

Radioactivity scans revealed at least twenty-two plants in the manufacturing area were contaminated. The Indonesian team did not identify the twenty-one additional production sites, but said they would promptly receive cleanup procedures carried out by Indonesia's nuclear authority.

A senior official declared that residents residing in strongly polluted zones would be relocated until the site was cleaned, adding that the safety of the residents was the “top priority”.

Health authorities also performed checks on nearby workers and residents living close to the manufacturing zone, identifying nine people who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. They were referred to a hospital before being allowed to return home.

Decontamination and Containment Measures

The affected sites will right away receive cleanup procedures by Indonesia's atomic energy agency. Authorities have further selected the site of a scrap metal plant as an containment facility for contaminated materials.

Indonesia, which has no atomic power plants or arms program, believes that Caesium-137 may have entered the country from overseas.

Caesium-137 is a dangerous radioactive isotope that usually enters the ecosystem as a result of atomic testing or incidents, like Fukushima or Chornobyl. Small amounts are found in earth, products and the atmosphere.
