Senegal's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” Camara said.
A Landmark Season and European Breakthrough
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
