The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
