The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United seem to be gathering momentum.

Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
